How Much Space Do I Need?

How Much Storage Space Do I Need?

There are several things you need to consider.

How much stuff do you have?

If it’s a complete house, then you will almost always under estimate this, so be realistic.  A good rule of thumb is to take a guess and add 50%.  We can advise, but it will always be an approximation.

Can your items be easily stacked?

This ones not often considered, but is probably one of the most important considerations.  If items can be stacked to the ceiling then you can fit a lot more stuff into a smaller floor area.  Boxing items using double walled cardboard boxes is a good way to achieve this.  Overall, buying some boxes can considerably reduce your storage costs if you are looking at a medium to long term storage period.

If not all items can be stacked, then you will need to take this into consideration as it will require a bigger storage space.

How much access do you need?

If you need regular access to most of your items, then you need to consider corridor space to access items at the back of the unit.  This will add to the space needed.  Small units (30sqft or less)  are less deep, so items are more easily reached.  If you only need to access a few items during the storage period, it is sensible to place these items near the door of your unit.

How much time do you have?

It may sound silly, but the more time you have the more you can organise your space.  Investing a bit of time at the start of your storage period can save money in the long run.  If you are short of time and are loading in items yourself, then a bigger unit is advised.
